3 Stars And she said…I mean…this is a good game
Down to what makes and does not make this game good. First off let me say that muskets and gun fire is the best sound in the world! lol!
Good:
- Graphics, all of the units and buildings look good and are very nice.
- Units rock, all of the units are nice and cool!
- Factions, I like the fact that their are a ton of factions. Just some don’t really need to be included, like Hannover.
- Naval battles, finally they fit this in. It should have been done with Medieval 2: Total War but they wanted to use ships with cannons.
Neutral(between):
- Tactical map, this thing is a big large map! The only bad thing is that none of the factions even go into the India part of the map, so why have it?
- History, most units are just normal units that almost every faction has. It would have been nice to see some good historically accurate units in the game. I no some units are, but the game makers did not make some units that made that period what it was! For example, France should have the Imperial Guard because Napoleon used them to win almost every battle he was in.
Bad:
- Steam, well…Steam is the worst! You have to have the internet to run the game, and if you don’t have the internet then you might as well burn the game cd.
- Crashes, if you buy this game and don’t use steam to patch it right away(which is impossible because steam is required to even install the game) your going to run around screaming and pulling your hair out.
- Indian factions, There are so many India factions that it gets all crazy in North America. Very hard to fight them with what Europeans used. Archers fire faster then guns : (
- Small factions, Most could be deleted from the game. They just use up space and plus they make massive armies that you could never do with only one city like the AI has with a single faction. Just not every fair.
- Battles, most battles with a AI larger army VS your own larger army does not work so well. The AI likes to stack all of it’s units to one side and then just push you until it wins. Even if you place elite units and have many troops flank to either side the AI still keeps moving until it takes out your cannons.
- Historical battles, I believe there is only 4 maps for the history battles. Which I thought there would be at least 10. More would have been better, like the battle of Waterloo, or any other great battle.
Over all:
Empire: Total War is a game that is some what kind of dumb when you first install it because you have to wait days to install and update and patch and then wait for Steam, make a Steam account, log in. Then finally play! You can play offline but Steam always wants you to play with the online mode. Most of the time if your internet goes down it won’t let you play the game. Which is the worst! Because I have really bad internet. The game play is fine, battles are some what bad but are okay I guess. Should have made the game more historically with units and factions. Although it crashes if you don’t get it patched it’s a okay game in all. Only one thought should run threw your brain before you buy this game, new or used.
If you buy a used version, most likely it won’t work. Steam does not let you install a already installed version, it’s nothing like normal just plain CD games(even if the person takes it off his/her PC then it still might not work. Really good chance it won’t work!). Buy a new copy, they are around $30 to $50. And well worth it, after the patches that is.
4 Stars Get the standard edition
It’s a great game, but the Special Forces Edition blows.
The special units aren’t so special. The art book that I thought I was getting turns out to be a tiny cheapo instruction manual with pictures in it. At least you got a fully bound, respectable book for special editions of other games like Guild Wars, for example.
This special forces edition is kind of a waste. Save your money and get the standard game instead.
5 Stars Great Game
I have had no problems with STEAM or installation at all. The game runs great as long as there are no other programs running as well. If there is a security scan or some other background program running or too many other people logged on the battles sometimes crash but when other stuff is paused or shut down everything runs fine. The battles are superb! STEAM has given me no problems, campaign is awesome. Defiantly worth the cash.
1 Star DO NOT BUY!!!
Title says it all. This is my first time buying an Empire game and I will not be buying another one. The funny part is, I never even got to play the game. I payed full price, waited for my purchase, installed, then was confounded when Steam (a program you are forced to install to even install Total War) kept giving me a “Game is unavailable at this time” error. The game is on my hard drive… yet Steam will not let me access it, at all. The game itself is probably great, but if Steam is involved you wont be allowed to enjoy it. Sega and Creative Assembly have really ruined a good thing, and will not be getting any more business from me, and hopefully not you.
1 Star Be careful what you buy!!!!
I love all Total War games. This is perhaps the best one yet. There is just one small problem. YOU CAN’T PLAY IT!!!!!!!!!!
In order to install the game, you need an internet connection with a Steam account. The game takes over 5 hours to install. If that wasn’t long enough, every time you go to load a game, it takes almost 10 minutes!!!! Also, Steam comes up with constant updates. That means that you have to update several times a week just to play the game. If your internet is down or if the update fails, you can’t play the game. THEY SHOULD HAVE TOLD YOU THAT ON THE BACK OF THE BOX!!!!!! I would have loved this game, but I can’t get it to work.

5 Stars Great game.
For a game that was released seven years ago, this is an extraordinary game.
It contains a fun and pretty long (over 40 missions with the expansion) single-player campaign, and equally fun multiplayer, which can be played with computers or humans.
It also comes with the Titans expansion. Overall, this is must buy for people who play RTS games.
2 Stars CD KEY PROBLEM
Dont buy this game from valuesoft there customer service suck. They dont have number to call them or even to email them. I bought this game last week to play online and guess what i cant because of the same cd key that they send to all people.
5 Stars good
was a great product and was just as the seller described. shipping to me seemed a little slow. took about 10 days when yo me it shouldnt take more than 5
5 Stars Great Challenge and Educational
My husband and sons (elementary age) LOVE this game. It is loaded with exciting mythical creatures, Gods from various cultures (Greek, Viking,etc.). It requires the user to be strategic so it is a great learning game. We bought it for a friend (2nd grader) who is loving it as well.
1 Star Buyer Beware!
Beware! This game contains a generic activation code that renders the game unable online. If you buy this version from this seller you will only be able to play single player.
I bought the game as a second copy for the specific purpose of playing multilayer and I was duped.
